Particularities

Due to the very high complexity of the software and the extremely numerous customization and permission options, a high level of knowledge and understanding of the software is required. Administration is done in the WPF Admin Client, both for the Omnitracker WPF Client and for the web version of Omnitracker. Both versions differ visually and structurally, but they have nearly complete feature parity. What the end user ultimately uses depends on many factors that are directly interrelated. These include the clients’ workflows, the administrator’s customizations, the modules used, and the complex permission system. Also, which version is in use by the customer and whether the WPF Client or the web version is used can vary.

Challenge

The challenge for the UX/UI designers is to develop features and functions in such a way that they provide a solid foundation for what will later be individually administered, without really knowing how the possibilities will be utilized in each individual company and what the final result will look like.

Teamwork

The work of the UX/UI team on Omnitracker primarily involves the Omnitracker Web version and the separate Admin Client when it comes to new features. The team is constantly working on improving usability and user flows. The UX team updates and maintains several design systems in Figma, with responsive auto-layout components and local variables. When new features are developed, we work according to the Double Diamond workflow. The largest feature I was involved in from start to finish was the dashboard feature, which visualizes Omnitracker data in the form of widgets, such as bar charts and pie or donut charts. The major challenge is the very high complexity of the software and the meaningful integration of new features into an existing architecture and structure.
